Not every memory change is dementia. Depression, medication, sleep, thyroid function and ordinary ageing all affect cognition, and telling them apart matters, because several of them are treatable.
What the evaluation looks at
Memory, language, attention, visuospatial ability and executive function, compared against the range expected for your age and education. The pattern across those areas is what distinguishes normal ageing from mild cognitive impairment, and one form of dementia from another.
For families as much as patients
A diagnosis is the beginning of a set of practical questions: driving, finances, living arrangements, and what to expect next. The feedback session is where those get discussed, and families are welcome in it.
What you receive
A written report for you and, with your consent, for the referring physician. A feedback session, and recommendations covering safety, support and follow-up.
